Taekwondo can be defined as a bare-hand combat discipline that involves using the whole body. It's a combat technique for self-defense, which entails techniques, including puncing, blocks, actions with hands and feet, dodges, jumping kicks, etc. The meaning of Tae is "to kick", Kwon is "punching", while Do means "method" or "way".
"Taekwondo" literally means the "art of hand and foot fighting." The first organized development of taekwondo is thought to be around the first century on the peninsula of Koria over 2000 years. Taekwondo was practiced in ancient times as far back as 5000 years ago. Taekwondo was first practiced as method of evading attacks from wild animals as well as a useful tool in hunting for food. Today, taekwondo represents not only a traditional martial art but also a modern sport practiced by over 70 million people in 200 countries with over 8 million black belts.
